Why ban high alkali glass fiber FRP products? -Explanation on the performance data and use hazards of high-alkali glass fiber

The public discussion on the properties of several types of glass fibers made by China Fiberglass Industry Association is hereby reproduced, hoping to be helpful to all customers and colleagues. The full text is as follows:

Recently, the secretariat of the Association received consultations from some composite material manufacturers about the performance defects and use hazards of clay glass fibers. With the structural reform of the supply side of the downstream industry and the upgrading of the demand for fiber raw materials in the transformation and development, the harm caused by inferior products such as clay and glass fiber has attracted more and more attention from all aspects. In this regard, the Secretariat has sorted out the data comparison of some performance indicators between clay glass fiber and other glass fiber varieties for your reference.

1. The main types of glass fiber

Alkali-free glass fiber (E glass fiber): glass fiber with very little alkali metal oxide content and good electrical insulation (the alkali metal oxide content is generally less than 0.8%).

Medium-alkali glass fiber (C glass fiber): a glass fiber with a medium-level alkali metal oxide content (the alkali metal oxide content is about 12%).

High-alkali glass fiber (A glass fiber): glass fiber with an alkali metal oxide content of more than 15%. Because waste glass is often used as raw material, crucibles made of clay are used for drawing production, so it is also called clay fiberglass.

High-strength glass fiber (S glass fiber): glass fiber drawn from silicon-aluminum-magnesium system glass (its new ecological strength is generally more than 25% higher than that of alkali-free glass fiber).

High modulus glass fiber (M glass fiber): glass fiber drawn from high modulus glass (its elastic modulus is generally more than 25% higher than that of ordinary alkali-free glass fiber).

Alkali-resistant glass fiber (AR glass fiber): glass fiber that contains a certain amount of zirconia and can resist long-term corrosion by alkaline substances.

High-silica glass fiber (R glass fiber): Glass fiber made by acid treatment and sintering after glass drawing, generally with a silicon content of about 96%-99%.

Low-dielectric glass fiber (D glass fiber): glass fiber drawn from low-dielectric glass, its dielectric constant and dielectric loss are lower than that of alkali-free glass fiber.

It is strictly forbidden to produce, sell and use high alkali (clay) glass fiber

The water resistance of clay glass fiber is extremely poor, and there are serious performance defects. The production and use of clay glass fiber can easily bring safety hazards. Therefore, as early as 1999, clay glass fiber was listed by the former State Economic and Trade Commission in the "Catalogue for Eliminating Outdated Production Capacities, Processes and Products". China expressly prohibits production, sale and use. The association has also organized or participated in special campaigns to investigate and crack down on the elimination of high-alkali glass fiber (clay glass fiber) for many times, and achieved certain results. However, due to the simple drawing process of clay crucibles, less investment in equipment, and small footprint, and in recent years, they have gradually moved to border areas and remote mountainous areas, making production more hidden, making it more difficult to combat and eliminate them.
Recently, as the production and sales of glass fiber are booming and the overall profit level of the industry continues to rise, clay glass fiber continues to develop in some areas, and some unscrupulous traders even apply clay glass fiber to some major engineering projects or export it to overseas markets. High-alkali glass fiber has serious performance defects. Once an accident occurs in related applications, it will definitely cause serious economic and social problems.
In this regard, the association advocates that all industry colleagues and all walks of life must strengthen the supervision of the production and use of clay glass fiber, and resolutely eliminate high-alkali (clay) glass fiber! (China Fiberglass Industry Association)
